Ireland must take advantage of Lisbon Treaty opportunities

Tuesday, 1 December 2009
IBEC, the group that represents Irish business, today said that the Lisbon Treaty, which comes into force today, represents an important milestone for Ireland and the EU. The group said the Treaty makes a number of changes to how the EU does business and it is up to Ireland to take full advantage of these changes.

IBEC Director of EU and International Affairs Brendan Butler said: “The Treaty will reform how decisions are made in the EU so that Europe can remain an engine for economic growth and prosperity. The Treaty will enable the EU to respond faster to the new challenges ahead, such as energy security, climate change and the rise of India and China as economic forces. This agility is vital for the success of business in Ireland.

“Our resounding yes vote on October 2nd confirmed our commitment to the European project and went some way to restoring our damaged international reputation.

“IBEC sees the nomination by President Barossa of Maire Geoghegan-Quinn as Commissioner for Research and Innovation as a key appointment that will support Ireland in its attempts to foster an increased emphasis on R&D by Irish business and the education sector. Research and innovation will be central to providing high quality jobs and prosperity, and the area is fundamental to both Europe’s and Ireland’s future competitiveness. The appointment will ensure that Ireland will play a key role in influencing both current and future research priorities and funding for the entire EU.”
